Gender based violence in Yambio declines due to awareness campaign

The chairperson for the Voluntary Community Action Group, Gloria Angelo Gene, has revealed that grassroots campaigns on gender based violence has significantly led to reduction of domestic violence cases across the county.

The campaign against gender based violence has seen an improvement in the community in terms of men’s behavior in terms of not assaulting women or women assaulting their Husbands.

“We held a lot of training with the community and there is improvement, we are urging other communities who are still Mistreating their Women to stop violence and become champion of peace in their Communities,” said Gene during the grassroots campaign on gender based violence in Yambio on Friday.

Gene said that by the time they started the work on issues related to gender based violence, they have received a lot of improvement in the community following the long engagement and Advocating campaign in the community.

Benjamin Commander Gayos, the Director General for Western Equatorial’s state ministry of local government and law enforcement said they are committed to fight gender based violence despite experiencing challenges.

“We also found out that the referral pathways for the criminal offences taking place in the community were not clear, it is the responsibility of victims, community and traditional leaders to deal with cases of GBV,” said Gayos.

The United Nations Population Fund through projects implemented by Amref Health Africa in South Sudan has been at the forefront providing critical support in combating gender based violence as well as improving health outcomes among communities.

The Situation Analysis report conducted this year by World Heath Organisation and health clusters partners indicates that South Sudan has one of the highest rate of Gender based violence globally with 65 percent of women reported as experiencing sexual violence.
