Boma-Badingilo Inscription Marks New Era for South Sudan’s Heritage

South Sudan has achieved a historic milestone after the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.

Speaking after returning from the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan,South Korea on Tuesday, the Minister of Culture, Museums and National Heritage,Sarah Nyanath said the inscription marks South Sudan’s first World Heritage Site and a defining moment for the country’s cultural and natural heritage.

“Today we return home carrying one of the greatest achievements in our nation’s cultural and natural heritage history. The Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape has been officially inscribed.

“She said the recognition confirms the landscape’s outstanding wildlife migration, biodiversity and cultural value while opening opportunities for conservation, scientific research, sustainable tourism and investment.

Nyanath also called on young people to embrace peace and participate in protecting the country’s natural heritage.

“Time for guns is gone; it is time for us to act now and do peaceful things”.

She added that the achievement strengthens South Sudan’s standing in the international community and thanked President Salva Kiir Mayardit for supporting efforts to safeguard the country’s heritage.
