South Sudan has called for stronger cooperation with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to attract investment in renewable energy and expand access to electricity across the country. The call was made by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Dams, Eng. Madhieu Achuil Mawien, while addressing the Ninth Session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly in New Delhi, India.Mawien said stronger partnerships with the alliance could help South Sudan turn its abundant renewable energy resources into practical investment projects that improve energy security and support economic growth. He commended the ISA for its efforts to accelerate global solar energy development, mobilize investment, strengthen institutional capacity and expand access to sustainable energy, particularly in developing countries. He also thanked the Indian government and people for hosting the assembly. The undersecretary highlighted South Sudan's significant potential in solar and hydropower, noting that the country's year-round sunshine offers opportunities to develop large-scale solar power plants, expand rural electrification and establish mini-grid systems. He said renewable energy could also support agriculture and other productive sectors while creating green employment opportunities and strengthening electricity infrastructure.Mawien called for a country partnership framework between South Sudan and the ISA, focusing on technical assistance, technology transfer, affordable financing and institutional and human capacity development. He emphasized that technical support, investment and appropriate financing mechanisms were essential to translating the country's renewable energy potential into operational projects. He further stressed that solar energy should be accessible to all countries, rather than remaining a privilege for nations with advanced infrastructure and greater financial resources.Mawien reaffirmed South Sudan's commitment to the objectives of the International Solar Alliance and expressed readiness to work with development partners, international financial institutions and the private sector to establish partnerships that improve electricity services and living standards.Photo Credit: Ministry of Energy
