Drone warfare is increasingly reshaping Sudan's conflict, with the country's warring parties using unmanned aerial vehicles to target military positions and critical infrastructure, raising concerns over the growing impact on civilians. The United Nations says drone strikes killed at least 880 civilians during the first four months of 2026, accounting for more than 80 percent of conflict-related civilian deaths recorded during the period. The figures highlight the growing role of drones in the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has continued to devastate communities across the country. Both sides have increasingly relied on drone operations to strike military installations, supply routes and strategic infrastructure, expanding the geographical reach of the fighting. The growing use of drones has also increased risks to civilians, particularly in populated areas where attacks on infrastructure and other essential facilities can disrupt access to basic services and humanitarian assistance. The conflict, which began in April 2023 following a power struggle between the army, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has triggered widespread displacement, destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis. The increasing number of civilian casualties from drone attacks has raised fresh concerns about the protection of civilians and compliance with international humanitarian law.The United Nations has repeatedly called on the warring parties to protect civilians, avoid attacks on civilian infrastructure and allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access to people affected by the conflict. As drone warfare becomes more prominent, concerns are growing that the expanding use of advanced weapons could further intensify the fighting and make efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire more difficult.
