Civil Society Alliance Condemns Reported Attack at Amiet Market

The South Sudan Civil Society Alliances (SSCSA) on Wednesday condemned a reported attack at Amiet Market in the Abyei Administrative Area that it said resulted in deaths and injuries.

In a statement issued Sept. 16, the civil society coalition expressed condolences to the bereaved families and communities and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The SSCSA called on all parties to exercise restraint, reject retaliation and refrain from hate speech, inflammatory statements and further violence.

“All disputes must be addressed through dialogue and peaceful conflict-resolution mechanisms,” the coalition said.

It urged the Abyei Administrative Area authorities and the national government to conduct a prompt, transparent and impartial investigation into the incident.

The coalition also called for individuals found responsible for violence or incitement to be held accountable in accordance with the law.

The SSCSA urged the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, known as UNISFA, community leaders, women and youth representatives, and civil society organizations to strengthen measures to protect civilians, prevent escalation and restore calm around Amiet Market.

The statement did not provide details on the number of people killed or injured, or identify those responsible for the reported attack.
