South Sudan Seeks Investment to Expand Solar Energy Sector

South Sudan is seeking stronger regional and international partnerships to expand solar energy investment and improve electricity access, Energy and Dams Minister Agok Makur Kur said Wednesday.

Kur made the remarks during the eighth meeting of the International Solar Alliance Regional Committee for the Africa Region, taking place in Victoria Falls from Aug. 25-27.

The meeting brings together energy ministers, representatives of ISA member countries, development partners and energy-sector experts to discuss ways to accelerate solar energy deployment and mobilize investment in renewable energy across Africa.

During a session for member countries, Kur reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access to electricity and promoting sustainable development. He highlighted South Sudan’s solar potential and other renewable energy resources as opportunities for addressing the country’s energy needs.

Kur said stronger regional and international cooperation is needed to make better use of available resources, address electricity supply challenges and create opportunities for economic growth.

South Sudan is seeking partnerships with governments, international institutions and private-sector investors to develop renewable energy projects, he said.

Speaking at a joint news conference attended by several energy ministers and International Solar Alliance Director General Ashish Khanna, Kur said the government was working to create a favorable investment environment and establish strategic partnerships to attract capital into the renewable energy sector.

Such investments could help increase electricity generation, strengthen essential services and improve livelihoods, he said.

The meeting is also considering several continental initiatives, including the launch of the flagship report, “Solarising Africa: Advancing the Continental Clean Energy Transition,” and the operationalization of the Africa Solar Facility, a blended-finance platform intended to mobilize institutional capital for solar projects.

Delegates are also discussing the Community of Practice on Solarisation of Agriculture in Africa and mechanisms to support renewable energy projects and strengthen cooperation among governments, private investors and development partners.

The initiatives support broader efforts under Mission 300, which aims to connect about 300 million people across Africa to electricity by 2030 through increased investment, expanded infrastructure and improved access.

South Sudan’s participation in the meeting is part of government efforts to strengthen its engagement with regional and international energy platforms while exploring financing and investment opportunities for the renewable energy sector.

The government expects the meeting to create opportunities for new partnerships with international institutions and investors as South Sudan seeks to increase electricity generation, diversify its energy sources, strengthen energy security and advance sustainable development.
