EU, Germany, France and Netherlands Condemn Deadly Attack on UN Peacekeepers in Jonglei
The European Union Delegation to South Sudan and the embassies of Germany, France and the Netherlands have strongly condemned the deadly attack on a United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) patrol in Jonglei State.
The attack, which occurred Monday, killed two UN peacekeepers and wounded others.
In a joint statement issued Tuesday, the diplomatic missions said UN peacekeepers play a critical role in protecting civilians, promoting peace and stability, facilitating the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance and monitoring and reporting on human rights.
“Attacks against peacekeepers are unacceptable and may constitute war crimes under international law,” the statement said.
The EU and the three European governments called for a full and transparent investigation and urged authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
They also expressed condolences to the families of the peacekeepers who were killed, saying the two personnel “paid the ultimate price in the service of good.”
The diplomatic missions also raised concern over the broader impact of violence in South Sudan, particularly in Jonglei, on civilians and humanitarian workers.
They said 36 humanitarian staff and contractors have been killed in the line of duty in South Sudan since January, already exceeding the 31 humanitarian personnel killed throughout 2025.
The EU, Germany, France and the Netherlands called on South Sudanese leaders to engage in genuine dialogue to support the peace process and prevent further violence.
