SPLM Holds Rally in Yei as Vice President Lays Foundation Stone for University
Vice President James Wani Igga and Central Equatoria State Gov. Emmanuel Adil Anthony led a major SPLM rally in Yei River County as the party stepped up grassroots mobilization ahead of South Sudan’s December elections.
Thousands of SPLM supporters, including youth, women and community members, gathered at the rally, carrying banners and singing in support of the party and President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
Wani Igga called on residents to remain united and peaceful and urged citizens to participate in large numbers in the December elections, saying a peaceful electoral process would help consolidate peace and democracy.
Adil thanked residents for the turnout and said the rally marked the beginning of broader grassroots mobilization across Central Equatoria State. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to free, fair and peaceful elections.
County officials and SPLM leaders pledged to support the party’s campaign and mobilize voters across Yei River County. Leaders also heard concerns from residents about peace, service delivery and development.
During his visit to Yei, Wani Igga also laid the foundation stone for the University of Yei, marking what officials described as a milestone in the expansion of higher education in the region.
The university was conceived under the leadership of Gov. Adil and approved by President Kiir as part of efforts to expand access to education.
Government officials said the establishment of the university is expected to strengthen Yei’s role as an education center in South Sudan’s Green Belt and create new opportunities for students from Yei and surrounding areas.
The visit combined political mobilization with a focus on education and development, as authorities seek to strengthen support for the SPLM while advancing development priorities in Central Equatoria State.
