Chinese Embassy Celebrates PLA’s 99th Anniversary in Juba

The Chinese Embassy in South Sudan has marked the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) with a reception in Juba attended by senior South Sudanese officials, diplomats, military officers, and representatives of the Chinese community.

The event, held on July 23, brought together around 120 guests, including Chinese Ambassador Ma Qiang, Defence Attaché Senior Colonel Chen Gaofeng, South Sudan’s Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs Lt. Gen. Chol Thon Balok, diplomats and defence attachés from several countries, Chinese peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and representatives of Chinese businesses operating in the country.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Ma highlighted the history and development of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, reaffirming China’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with South Sudan through closer diplomatic and defence cooperation.

Senior Colonel Chen Gaofeng said the Chinese military remains committed to working with countries around the world to promote peace, preserve the achievements of the Second World War, and uphold the international order.

Lt. Gen. Chol Thon Balok welcomed the growing defence relationship between the two countries and expressed hope for stronger military dialogue, exchanges, and cooperation to further enhance the longstanding friendship between South Sudan and China.

The reception featured cultural performances, promotional videos, and a photo exhibition showcasing the development of the Chinese military. Guests praised China’s contributions to international peacekeeping efforts and its role in promoting global peace and security.

The event underscored the expanding diplomatic and military ties between China and South Sudan as both countries continue to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors.
