South Sudan to Introduce 10-Year and EAC E-Passports in 2027

The Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passports and Immigration has announced plans to introduce a new generation of South Sudanese passports in August 2027, featuring a 10-year validity period and the rollout of East African Community (EAC) e-passports.
The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to modernize the country’s travel document system, strengthen passport security, and align South Sudan’s immigration services with regional standards.
Officials say the introduction of the EAC e-passport will facilitate travel within the East African Community while enhancing the integrity and international recognition of South Sudan’s travel documents.
The announcement comes shortly after the Directorate received 37,500 new passport booklets on 25 July 2026 to address a nationwide shortage that had delayed passport issuance. Authorities say the new stock will help clear the backlog of pending applications and improve service delivery for citizens seeking travel documents.
The Directorate has advised applicants to continue following official passport application procedures as distribution of the newly arrived booklets begins across the country.
Further details on the application process, fees, and the nationwide rollout of the new-generation passports are expected to be announced ahead of the planned launch in August 2027.
