Human rights activist Ter Manyang Gatwech, Executive Director of the Nile Institute for Human Rights Studies (NIHRS), has urged the governments of South Sudan and Sudan to resolve the long-standing Abyei dispute through peaceful and internationally recognized mechanisms.

In a statement, Ter Manyang called for the implementation of relevant international agreements and resolutions, impartial arbitration, or a credible referendum conducted under the supervision of a neutral international body.

He said a transparent and fair process would help ensure that any outcome is accepted by all parties while protecting the rights and interests of the people of Abyei.

“A peaceful resolution of the Abyei dispute is essential for strengthening relations between South Sudan and Sudan, promoting regional stability, and securing lasting peace for the people of Abyei,” he said.

Ter Manyang also appealed to both governments and the international community to demonstrate the political will needed to reach a just, durable, and peaceful settlement of the disputed territory.

The status of Abyei has remained unresolved since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, despite several agreements and mediation efforts aimed at determining the area’s final status.
