Russia Congratulates South Sudan on Independence Day, Backs Preparations for First National Elections

The Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation has congratulated South Sudan on the 15th anniversary of its Independence, while expressing support for the country’s preparations for its first nationwide elections.

The Chairperson of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, Ella Pamfilova, has sent a congratulatory message to the Chairperson of South Sudan’s National Elections Commission, Prof. Abednego Akok Kacuol, marking the country’s Independence Day on 9 July.

In the message dated 9 July 2026, Pamfilova conveyed sincere congratulations on behalf of the Russian electoral body, describing South Sudan’s Independence Day as a landmark occasion that symbolizes the country’s sovereignty and its people’s aspirations for peace, unity, and prosperity.

The Russian election chief also acknowledged the significant responsibilities facing South Sudan’s National Elections Commission as it prepares for the country’s first nationwide elections.

Pamfilova wished Prof. Akok and the Commission success in carrying out what she described as a crucial mission, expressing hope for continued progress in strengthening South Sudan’s electoral system as a key foundation for democracy, political stability, and social harmony.

South Sudan is preparing to hold its first general elections since gaining independence in 2011, with the National Elections Commission leading preparations for the polls scheduled later this year.
