Western Nations, EU Condemn Attack on Humanitarian Workers in Jonglei

The Embassies of Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the Delegation of the European Union have condemned the attack on humanitarian workers employed by the John Dau Foundation in Duk County, Jonglei state.

On June 29, 2026, a humanitarian convoy transporting staff operated by the John Dau Foundation (JDF) returning from an Action Against Hunger training exercise came under attack on Monday along the route between Payuel Payam and Pajut, in Duk county, Jonglei State.

The attack resulted in at least 17 deaths, including 5 humanitarian workers, and left 9 others injured

“Humanitarian workers dedicate their lives to saving others and reaching people in desperate need. They must never be a target,” said UN Humanitarian Coordinator Ramanathan Balakrishnan, who called for a prompt, impartial investigation and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

“We express our condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those killed. Those responsible for this attack must be held accountable”, the western nations and EU said.

All parties have to respect and protect humanitarian personnel and assets. Humanitarian workers must never be targets, the statement read.
