Ministry of Health and UN discuss Strengthening Health Sector
𝐇𝐨𝐧, 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐫 𝐎𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐨, 𝐇𝐨𝐧, 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐬𝐬 𝐋𝐮𝐤𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐔𝐍 – 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
Hon. Luke Thompson Thoan – National Minister of Health , held a productive meeting with the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Ramanathan Balakrishnan, to discuss key issues affecting South Sudan’s health sector.
The discussions focused on areas of mutual concern, including the implementation of the Health Sector Transformation Project, national preparedness for potential Ebola outbreaks, and support to the National Public Health Institute.
Hon. Luke Thompson emphasized the long-standing partnership between South Sudan and the United Nations, noting that the collaboration dates to the country’s struggle for independence. He underscored the importance of maintaining this partnership while recognizing South Sudan’s sovereignty and promoting constructive, respectful, and diplomatic engagement in addressing shared challenges.
Mr. Ramanathan Balakrishnan reaffirmed the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting the people and Government of South Sudan, particularly in strengthening the health sector and advancing humanitarian assistance.
The UN delegation included representatives from WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, OCHA, and IOM.The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Government of South Sudan and the United Nations to improving health outcomes, strengthening disease preparedness, and building a resilient health system for all citizens.
