Three Abductees Escape NAS Captivity in Morobo County

Three civilians, including a school-age pupil, have successfully escaped captivity after being abducted by National Salvation Front (NAS) rebels in Morobo County, Central Equatoria State, local officials confirmed.
The escapees were received by Morobo County Commissioner Joseph Mawa after enduring a grueling journey through dense bush to reach safety and reunite with their families.
According to the victims, they were abducted days prior during a nighttime raid by NAS fighters in Aworo. The rebels reportedly targeted multiple villages, forcibly taking residents from various locations, including two brothers from the same household.
The survivors recounted harsh treatment during their captivity, stating that their hands were bound and their personal belongings confiscated as they were marched between various rebel locations over several days. They eventually managed to slip away when an opportunity arose.
Commissioner Mawa condemned the abductions, characterizing them as forced recruitment tactics.
“Targeting innocent civilians and forcing them into rebel ranks is an anti-peace act that has no place in our communities,” Mawa said, emphasizing that civilians must not be subjected to abduction, intimidation, or violence.
The Commissioner provided psychological support to the victims upon their return and urged local residents to remain vigilant and report any security threats to the authorities. Local leaders have since reiterated their commitment to strengthening security and protecting civilians in the affected areas of Morobo County.
