New UNICEF Flash Update for South Sudan reveals worsening situation forchildren in Jonglei state

UNICEF South Sudan has issued an urgent flash update indicating a deteriorating situation for
children in Jonglei state, where violence and conflict are raging.
Key points include:
- 100,000 are estimated to have fled to Ethiopia from Akobo town after the evacuation order
was issued. Akobo hospital was looted and closed - 28 health and nutrition facilities have been destroyed or looted since January 1st. Health,
nutrition and clean water and sanitation supplies have been stolen in 17 incidents
countrywide, 80% in Jonglei - Rates of malnutrition amongst displaced children are worryingly high – a quarter of all children
under five are malnourished - UNICEF has delivered 220 metric tons of supplies to displaced populations in some of the
affected areas – access remains a challenge in some areas
