Dialogue Vital to Restore Confidence and Peace in South Sudan, UN Chief Says

By Kidega Livingstone

JUBA, South Sudan – Tom Fletcher, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, has underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue and strong leadership in advancing peace and rebuilding confidence in South Sudan’s future.

Speaking on the implementation of the peace process, Fletcher emphasized that dialogue which brings all key voices to the table is essential for consolidating peace and unlocking the country’s potential. South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has faced persistent security and humanitarian challenges, making effective political engagement more critical than ever.

“We will be following very closely the implementation of the peace process,” Fletcher said. “We are strong supporters of genuine and inclusive national dialogue. It’s vital to bring all the key voices around the table to open opportunities and realise the potential of South Sudan  a young country born in a moment of great optimism.”

He added that South Sudanese leadership must work together to restore confidence and strengthen trust in the country’s future, especially as parties continue grappling with the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement and rising political tensions.

Fletcher’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the United Nations, regional partners, and South Sudanese leaders to address persistent violence and humanitarian needs, and to support preparations toward credible elections scheduled for December 2026.
