CEPO calls on presidency to speed up election-related tasks

By Simon Deng

The transitional unity government has been asked to urgently implement key election-related tasks to prepare the country for elections in December 2026.

“The immediate action required is for the political leaders at the presidency to make decisions on the electoral process before November 2024,” said Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) in a statement on Wednesday.

Yakani said the current election laws should be amended to ease the work of the National Election Commission, adding that CEPO is ready to engage in civic education and other election-related tasks.

He called on the national legislative assembly to speed up the amendment of the National Elections Act, 2023 to ease undertaking tasks such as civic and voter education.

Yakani also implored the parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement to demonstrate the renewed political will to implement many pending peace tasks, which are critical for the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections.

“One of the outstanding findings now is the amendment of the National Election Act, 2023 as amended for structuring civic and voter education, funding for the election-related institutions, and also opening up of civic and political space and completing the security arrangement,” he said.
