President Kiir urged to declare a state of emergency as floods overrun 6 states

President Salva Kiir Mayardit is expected to declare a states of emergency due to floods that is affecting more than 700,000 people in South Sudan this year.
South Sudan’s Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Albino Akol says, he is requesting the Council of Ministers to recommend to President Kiir to declare a national disaster in parts of the country due to flooding.
“There is a possibility that the peak of the flood will be expected to be in November 2024,” said the Deputy Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Dr. Jacob Maiju Korok after an extraordinary council of ministers meeting on Thursday.
Jonglei, Upper Nile, Unity, Warrap, Northern Barh-el-ghazal States and Abyei Administrative Area are the most affected by the floods. Major infrastructure such as schools, health centres and roads destroyed and inaccessible.
“Over 772,000 people, across 38 counties and administrative areas are affected by the climate change.
“35,000 people are displaced, schools, hospitals, and other important infrastructure in the states are destroyed,” stated Dr. Maiju
Dr. Jacob Maiju Korok said, declaration of a state of emergency can allow the government to mobilize some resources from donors to support to support the citizens affected by the flooding.
