Media Authority advises journalists to verify online information

The South Sudan Media Authority advised journalists on Thursday to always verify information on social media to prove authenticity.

“We are getting information but not all information put on social media are bad, there are good ones, do not get garbage without knowing whether they are good, real, productive or they are just scam,” said Sapana Abuyi, the Director General for Information and Media Compliance at the Media Authority during the closing of the symposium of media and information literacy in Juba.

Isaac Aloro, the Acting Speaker for the Central Equatoria state parliament said the government will enact laws to protect media and media practitioners.

“We consume information all the time and this information has good and bad intentions, as government we will enact laws that protect media and media practitioner so that they are able to discharge their duties without obstacles,” said Aloro.

He said they recognize the vital role media plays in society.

“Media helps the citizens to make informed decisions and choices, we want media to spread information that portrays positive image of the country,” said Aloro.
