Returnees in Twic County face fines for adultery, child trafficking

By Hou Akot Hou

Returnees who recently fled conflict to Twic County of Warrap state have been issued two- month period by a local court to pay fines for adultery and child trafficking.

Pasquale Kuol Majok, the Executive chief of Twic County, said on Wednesday that many returnees escaped to Sudan following outbreak of conflict in December 2013 with married women and girls from the host community.

“Some people escaped to Sudan sometime back with the girls and women of some people. And whenever the relatives of the girls asked them they denied. Such scenarios are complicated and as they have returned, some people started coming to us to open cases,” he told The Juba Echo in an interview.

Deng Dut, a member of the host community said some of the family members of these returnees are well-off, adding that they should not have been accorded lengthy period to clear their fines.

He appealed to the local chiefs to resist bribes so that justice is served.
