Indian peacekeepers hailed for supporting peace

The Indian contingent in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan has been hailed for doing philanthropic activities and as well rendering support in capacity building.

“We applauded Indian contingent in UNMISS for rendering support in capacity building and philanthropic activities in South Sudan, and Indian police personnel in UNPOL for their extraordinary service in challenging circumstances,” said Vishnu Kumar Sharma, the Indian Ambassador to South Sudan during the celebration of the 74th Republic Day of India in Juba on Thursday.

“We are also conveying sincere appreciation and thanks to Indians working in religious congregations such as Daughters of Mary Immaculate and Don Bosco, their selfless service of humanity in South Sudan is noble and helpful towards the cause of peace and development in the world youngest nation,” he added.

During the celebrations, videos on Indian tourism, India’s rich heritage, celebration of International Year of Millet 2023, and patriotic songs were played.

The participants also got an opportunity to refresh their history even as snippets of India’s unsung heroes of its great struggle for independence from colonial rule as well as that on the significance of India’s Republic Day were being screened.      

Sharma said the government of India and its Missions abroad are organizing several events in collaboration with the Indian diaspora abroad to cherish the memories of India’s great leaders and unsung heroes of freedom struggle, rich culture and heritage of India, achievements of India.

“For Indian diaspora in South Sudan, it was a matter of immense pride that Mr. Patel was conferred with Pravasi Diwas Samman this year, especially as it coincided with AKAM celebrations. On behalf of Indian community members, Ambassador also felicitated Mr. Patel for his exceptional humanitarian work and community welfare activities being carried out over years,” he said.
