WFP Map Highlights Road Access Constraints Across South Sudan

Road access remains a major challenge for humanitarian and commercial transport across South Sudan, with several routes reported as difficult or impassable, according to a physical access constraints map published by the World Food Programme (WFP) on Aug. 7, 2026.
The map assesses the physical condition of roads across the country and identifies routes as passable, passable with difficulties or not passable. WFP cautioned that the assessment covers the physical condition of roads only and does not reflect political or security conditions that could also affect access.
The assessment covers major humanitarian corridors linking towns and counties across South Sudan, including routes around Juba, Bor, Torit, Yambio, Wau, Rumbek, Malakal, Bentiu, Aweil and other areas.
According to the map, a number of key routes are designated for heavy trucks, including 40-metric-ton vehicles. These include the Juba-Nimule, Juba-Mangalla, Juba-Mundri, Juba-Lainya, Juba-Terekeka and Juba-Torit corridors, as well as routes connecting Wau, Aweil, Kuajok, Rumbek, Yirol, Mvolo, Mundri and other locations.
Other routes are identified for 20-metric-ton trucks, covering important corridors such as Torit-Kapoeta, Kapoeta-Narus, Malakal-Baliet, Renk-Paloich, Paloich-Melut, Bentiu-Guit, Bentiu-Kilo 30 and several routes in Jonglei and Upper Nile states.
The map also identifies locations where last-mile delivery may be possible by Land Cruiser, highlighting the continuing logistical challenges facing humanitarian operations in remote parts of the country.
WFP said the map was prepared by its Logistics Cluster GIS Unit using information from WFP, IOM, OCHA, UNOPS, UNMISS, MAF, GUAL and GeoNames. The map data includes a warning that some information has not been verified and should be used with caution.
The assessment was created on Aug. 7 and is intended primarily to support humanitarian planning and logistics. It does not constitute an official determination of state or county boundaries, nor does it imply official endorsement of the boundaries shown.
