A coalition of Western embassies and the European Union Delegation to South Sudan have issued a joint statement expressing “grave concern” over recent parliamentary amendments made to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement without the full consensus of its signatories.

The sharp diplomatic pushback follows the Transitional National Legislative Assembly’s passage of amendments to the landmark treaty.

In the joint text, the embassies of Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, alongside the EU, reaffirmed that the 2018 agreement remains the sole baseline for the transitional government’s legitimacy.

The international partners stressed that any modifications to the peace framework must be born out of authentic dialogue involving all signatory parties, while issuing an immediate call for a total cessation of hostilities across the country.
