Warrap court sentences local alcohol dealer to 3 years in prison
A court in Warrap state has sentenced a local dealer of a banned alcohol drink to 3 years in prison.
Awien Manut, a resident of Gogrial East County was arrested for brewing local brew popularly known as “Dakaya” which is made from yeast and sugar.
In 2019, authorities in Warrap state banned the brewing of Dakaya and the sale of other potent gins like royal gin and star gin which they blame for idleness and violence among youth.
Col. Madut Anei, the Gogrial East police inspector said on Thursday that Manut had defied several warnings from authorities to stop her business, thus leading to her arrest and conviction.
He said the woman embarked on the banned illicit business, saying that she has no other means to earn a living for her family of seven.
“The court pronounced her guilty as she has been warned many times which she did not heed to. So she got 3 years in prison and a fine of 150,000 SSP,” Anei said.
Warrap state often experiences violence in the form of cattle raiding which authorities partly blame on heavy consumption of alcohol among youth.
