University of Bahr El Ghazal staff strike over unfulfilled salaries

The Academic Staff of University of Bahr El Ghazal on Wednesday declared indefinite strike over delays by government to re-adjust their salaries to the rate of the central bank.

Joseph Lual Dario Deng, the Academic Staff Association Chairperson said they are demanding immediate payment of arrears stemming from July 2022 and allowances.

“We need immediate payment of annual ticket allowances arrears which was approved on 19 July 2019 for the fiscal year 2019/2020, 2021/2022, and the new salary scale must include budget for training of teaching staff, increased medical allowances and ticket allowances,” said a statement issued by the university staff.

The University of Bahr El Ghazal staff based in Wau town have now joined their counterparts at Upper Nile University who on Tuesday laid down tools over similar demands.

They said the General Assembly extra-ordinary meeting held on the 3rd of January 2023 unanimously agreed to stage strike.

“We are informing your esteemed office that the General Assembly has confirmed indefinite industrial action as the Academic Staff Association of UBG: Wau,” said excerpt from the letter written to Changson Chang, the National Minister of Higher Education.

The aggrieved staff said they will only return to lecture rooms when their grievances are settled by the government.
