Torit officials concerned over mysterious behavior among school girls
The Commissioner of Torit County Jacob Attari Albano on Tuesday says he is concerned over a mysterious disease affecting school girls at Murahataiha boma of Eastern Equatoria State.
The disease has so far killed a girl leaving 40 others undergoing treatment in Torit state hospital,
Local authorities say the unknown disease forces girls to behave in a mysterious manner.
Albano says that the community of Murahataiha might have been bewitched by somebody.
“Somebody might have cursed the school of Murahatiha because there is traditional kind of belief where Monyio-miji went to a traditional fortune teller, somebody who was doing renovation in that school was not paid. The head teacher went and opened the school without paying those who renovated the school,” Albano told Juba Echo.
He says they are currently investigating the incident to find out the company that renovated the school.
Dr. Paul Sebit who works at Torit hospital says a team of medics have failed to detect the mysterious disease affecting the girls.
He adds that they have sought support from spiritual leaders to pray for the victims.
“Some of them (girls) stabilize in the morning but in the evening they start again crying, shouting like they want to run out of the hospital, they appear like they have Malaria,” Sebit says.
On Sunday, thousands of Christians gathered at our lady of holy rosary church in Torit to pray for the victims.
