The National Assembly received a power generator from the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt to sustain power supply to the national assembly.

The one-mega watt was received this morning which the speaker said will ensure sustainable supply of power for their activities in the national assembly not to be interrupted.

The speaker of the Transitional National Assembly Jemma Nunu Kumba said the donation was their request to their Egyptian counter part to support their work during the transitional period.

She said they had had power breakdown constantly that needed swift solution to support the assembly to enable their activities done without interruption.

“Much as we have the city power, it is not enough. It goes on and off. They mist be extended by a standby generator,” she said.

She added that the modern generator would prevent a gap in the power supply for the parliament not to lag behind in terms of active

“This does not mean that we as the country does not have the power to develop our power base,” she cited.

Kumba said they had developed a 900-mega watt related to power plant on the Nile, which has been left as an option that the government has to look on it.

She added that there was an alternative to buy electricity through importation forms the Karuma power plant.

She said there is need for the country to have cheaper power, which might take time to attain.

“We pay a lot of money to get the city power which is expensive but we have no options but we have no option,” she said.

She said the donation does not indicate that they are not able to afford a power generation but rather allocate the resource to another thing of interest when they got a donor.

“We as the representative of the people, we would like to have electricity which is a cheaper electricity for our citizens which is a concern for us as the members of parliament,” she said.

She said the action for the initiation of the project would be from the executive to bring their proposal to the parliament to be approved.

Egyptian ambassador to South Sudan Moataz Moustafa Abdel Kader however said their support to the country is to help their brotherly country South Sudan for the implementation

“Its our duty in Egypt to support our brothers and sisters in South Sudan on any aspect. We can not hesitate in any one minute to support and help any time despite the global economic crisis,” he said.

He said the historical and long relation with South Sudan will not end in the donation but more collaboration to help the country.
