Speaker to push for compulsory medical insurance for MPs
The Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) Jemma Nunu Kumba on Tuesday vowed to pursue plans that will see each of the 555 MPs benefiting from medical insurance.
Her remarks came during the sendoff of the late Salva Mathok Gengdit’s body by MPs in Juba.
“We are going to discuss with you colleagues on the need to come up with the policy of compulsory medical insurance for each MP,” Kumba said as she addressed lawmakers.
Kumba argued that when MPs are medically covered they can easily get treated on time.
“Because when you have medical insurance, you can be attended to on time. This is something we are going to discuss with you,” she said.
Salva Mathok Gengdit a long-serving member of parliament passed away last week in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand where he was seeking treatment.
“We will fight over this whether you like or not, and I think that is the best thing for MPs because sometimes when we get our small medical allowance, some other emergencies come up and we spend on them,” Kumba said.
