Speaker Nunu in Geneva as Gender Parity Launches

By Kidega Livingstone
Jemma Nunu Kumba, Speaker of the National Legislative Assembly of South Sudan, attended
the launch of a global gender‐parity campaign in Geneva. Gender parity equal representation
and opportunity for all genders in areas such as education, politics and the workforce is the
focus of this initiative.
In a press statement seen by Juba Echo on Wednesday, Nunu said that during the 40th session
of the Inter‑Parliamentary Union (IPU) Forum of Women Parliamentarians, a campaign aimed
at pushing parliaments and governments to achieve 50:50 gender representation via a 10-
point system was launched.
“On the first day of the conference,” she said, “I had the honour of attending the 40th Session
of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians a space where women legislators from across the
world come together to share experiences and champion greater representation and gender
equality in our parliaments.”
On Monday, Nunu arrived in Geneva with an accompanying delegation to attend the IPU’s
151st Assembly.
The IPU is a global organization that brings together national parliaments to discuss
international issues, strengthen democracy and promote peace through dialogue and
cooperation. It is often regarded as the legislative equivalent of the
United Nations General Assembly.
