South Sudan, UN Discuss Abyei Peace Process and Election Participation

South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Amb. Dr. James Pitia Morgan, held talks on Thursday with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mr. Guang Cong, focusing on the situation in the Abyei Area and ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the meeting reviewed the latest political and security developments in Abyei, the implementation of the Abyei Protocol, and the role of the United Nations in supporting peace and stability in the disputed region.

The two officials also discussed Abyei’s participation in South Sudan’s forthcoming general elections, a matter that remains central to the area’s political future.

During the meeting, Dr. Morgan reaffirmed the Government of South Sudan’s commitment to working closely with the United Nations and regional partners to advance peace, strengthen stability, and ensure the full implementation of the Abyei Protocol.

For his part, Mr. Guang Cong reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to continued engagement with the Government of South Sudan in support of lasting peace and stability in the Abyei Area.

The meeting forms part of ongoing consultations between the Government of South Sudan and the United Nations aimed at addressing political and security challenges in Abyei while advancing efforts toward a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the area’s long-standing status.
