Six displaced women found after going missing for days in Unity state
Six internally displaced women who went missing last week have been found in Unity state.
The women had left the protection of civilians’ site near Unity oil field in search of water lilies for feeding due to hunger, but they never returned to their area of abode for three days.
Authorities were forced to declare manhunt for the women who were feared abducted.
Mary Nyakim Mut, a 41-year-old mother of 8, said they spent three days in the water as they struggled to find a safe route way back home.
She told Juba Echo on Monday that they were saved by electricity light from the nearby Unity oilfield.
“We spent three days in the flooded water, we suffered from mosquito bites,” Nyakim said during an interview in Bentiu protection of civilian site.
She added that her children have suffered with hunger for three days in her absence.
Maria Nyakueth Tai, 35, said they got lost when they were going to collect water lilies in Modin area located east of the protection of civilian site.
“We went to collect water lilies to feed our children because there was no available food at home. The UN World Food Program suspended food distribution in the protection of civilians’ site,” Tai said.
Several people in Bentiu internally displaced people’s camp depend on fish and water lilies to survive after the WFP suspended food distribution due to funding shortfall.
