Second Cholera vaccination targets over 633,000 in Juba County

The Second round of Oral cholera vaccination set to kick off on September 5th will see 633,336 people vaccinated in Juba County.

 John Rumunu, the Director General for Preventive Health Services told journalists during the weekly COVID-19 press briefing in Juba on Sunday.

“The ministry of health and partners put in place interventions to prevent Cholera including, oral cholera vaccine,” Rumunu said.

In 2018 Cholera outbreak was declared in South Sudan.

“Since 2018 there have been no cases of confirmed Cholera until 2022 when new cases were confirmed in Rubkona County of Unity State,” Rumunu disclosed.

He said they are conducting the second round of Oral Cholera Vaccination is preventive measure following the latest outbreak.

Rumunu said the Oral Cholera Vaccine confers immunity for up to a maximum of three years.

“The history of cholera in South Sudan indicates that when Cholera starts in one location it spreads to other locations because of the movement of people,” he said.
