Rumbek striking teachers arrested

Police in Rumbek have arrested a number of teachers over a peaceful demonstration held Today.
The teachers from Pachong Primary School were part of a peaceful demonstration held in Rumbek town on Wednesday morning.
Reliable sources shared photos of pupils from the school joined by their colleagues from two schools; from Pachong and Maleng Agok primary schools were joined by their pupils in the protest.
The teachers were demanding payments of their delayed salary arrears. Juba Echo could not however confirm the number of months their arrears have not been paid.
The protesters carried placards with messages demanding immediate payments of their dues.
They also said that some of their colleagues had abandoned the professions citing frustrations due to non-payment of salaries.
James Marer Aluel, the Director General Ministry of Education of Lakes States declined to comment on the issue saying, “You cannot ask from far, whatever information I might give you might not be valid. It’s good for you to come on ground. I cannot talk to you now because I might not know the person I am talking to now”.
Police Spokesperson Maj. Gen Daniel Justin Bola said he had not received any information on the alleged arrest or protest.
