Produce wasting in Magwi County due to poor roads: Commissioner
The commissioner of Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria state David Otto Remson on Wednesday decried the poor road infrastructure in the state.
Otto said that traders are finding it difficult to navigate the poor roads on their way to the markets.
“The road is not good in Magwi County, of course Magwi County is a greenbelt and it is more productive in agriculture,” Otto told journalists during the visit of the UN high-level delegation to Magwi on Wednesday.
He said perishable goods are being wasted due to poor transport from farmlands to the markets.
“We have a lot of food that is getting rotten in the stores and the stores that we have are cooperative stores,” he said.
“I remember the first production was eight tons of maize that got destroyed in the stores,” added Otto.
Magwi County is currently supplying Juba with food, but it’s potential is being held back by poor infrastructure.
The commissioner urged partners to build the capacity of local farmers in a bid to boost food production.
“Some farmers in Magwi lack proper skills on how to properly store food, they also need to be trained on new modern farming to boost food production,” said Otto.
