President Salva Kiir has directed the newly appointed minister of interior, Angelina Teny and her deputy Marial Gumke to work together to deliver on the mandate of the security institution.
President Kiir was speaking on Monday during the swearing in of the newly appointed security officials including Isaiah Akol Mathiang, the deputy governor of Lakes state officiated by Chief Justice Chan Reec Madut in Juba.
“President Kiir has directed the newly appointed minister of interior Angelina Teny and her deputy Marial Gumke to work together in order to enable the institution to deliver on its mandate,” the presidency said in a statement.
The First Vice President, Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon urged the officials of the ministry of interior to prepare a conducive environment ahead of the 2024 elections.
Both the interior minister Angelina Teny and her deputy Marial Gumke have promised to work jointly with their colleagues in the ministry to achieve the overall direction of the political leadership.
Teny who is also the wife of First Vice President Riek Machar was appointed to the position by President Salva Kiir last week. She last served as defense minister until her sacking in March this year.
The re-appointment of Teny as interior minister is seen as a sign of progress among the main signatories to the 2018 revitalized peace deal who have always blamed each other for the slow implementation of the agreement.
