President Kiir among three regional leaders mediating peace in Sudan

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit is among three regional leaders chosen by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to mediate between the warring rival military factions in Sudan.

Deng Dau Deng, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said Kiir will work together with William Ruto of Kenya and Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti.

“President Salva Kiir called on both regional and international partners to join efforts, and work with the government of South Sudan to support the Juba Peace Agreement towards finding a peaceful solution to the Sudan crisis,” Deng told journalists in Juba on Tuesday.

Juba mediated the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement between the Sudan Sovereign Council led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and several armed opposition groups to end decades of conflicts in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile regions.

This peace deal which was hailed by the region and international community for ending the deadly conflicts appears now at risk of unraveling in the aftermath of the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The conflict which broke out on Saturday is pitting powerful rival general Al-Burhan against his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the feared and powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The two sides disagreed over the integration process and command for the RSF upon integration into the national army, sparking fierce battles in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.

Deng said the high-level presidential team led by Salva Kiir is aiming to travel to Khartoum to discuss with the two warring generals who appear to have dug in basing on their bellicose statements.
