Peace and reconciliation conference for Jikany community starts in Unity State
The three-day peace and reconciliation conference aimed at uniting members of Jikany community commenced on Tuesday in Bentiu town of Unity State.
Joseph Monytuil Wejang, the Governor of Unity State urged the Jikany community to end revenge killings.
“As a state governor, I am not happy with what you are doing because ending these aimless revenge killings targeting very important people in the community is very important for Jikany community,” Monytuil said.
He said that the resolutions of the conference will be implemented by his government.
“What is enough is enough you should not look for another mess again, and after this conference let the people move freely without thinking of revenge killing and road ambushes,” Monytuil said.
The state minister of peacebuilding, Madut Ruei appealed to the Jikany community to end revenge killing and educate children for the betterment of the Jikany community.
“I have requested you to encourage these children to go to school rather than teaching them how to revenge because revenge is now ending, and after ending you will find big gap in education sector, so it’s better to educate children than making them to revenge for what they do not know,” Ruei said.
The purpose of conducting the peace and reconciliation conference is aimed at ending long term revenge killings and community retaliation among the Jikany community.
The Jikany community peace conference was attended by both national members of parliament and state members of transitional members of parliament, state government ministers, peace commissioners, and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The Jikany community intra-conflicts started in 2022 with the killing of a senior army officer and World Health organization staff.
