Over 750 households in Aweil town lack of pit latrines

Authorities of Aweil municipal council in Northern Bahr El Ghazal state have said more than 750 households lack of pit latrines.

This was revealed by a survey conducted by a committee comprising of municipal staff and the local government.

Charles Malong Anyuon, the deputy town mayor for planning and development in Aweil town, said they have given one month period for all these families to dig proper latrines.

“The time that we gave them has not yet elapsed, we told them to work hard to complete digging of the latrines to avoid outbreak of cholera and diarrhea,” he told Juba Echo on Thursday.

Northern Bahr El Ghazal is among the states that have been grappling with cholera outbreaks due to open defecation. The situation was exacerbated following heavy flooding since 2022.

“Some people are still in the farms away from their homes, so we have to wait for them to come back to tell them to comply with the order of the municipality,” Malong said.
