Over 750 farmers receive food donation in Unity state
Universal Intervention and Development Organization (UNIDO) a local NGO on Thursday donated food assistance to 800 farmers in Guit, Koch and Panyijiar Counties of Unity State.
Benjamin Dak Bath, UNIDO Project Officer said the food assistance is aimed to ease livelihoods of farmers and also to supplement their harvest loses during the recent heavy flooding.
The beneficiaries are particularly vegetable farmers who are carrying with farming amid heavy devastation from floods.
“Our purpose of donating food items is to encourage local farmers to prioritize cultivation to fight hunger and starvation in the three counties,” said Dak.
The United Nations estimated that more than 900,000 people have been displaced by floods since the start of 2022 in South Sudan.
Dak disclosed that the food donation will continue for the next for three years to support local farmers.
“We are only supporting farmers whom we have already identified and assessed with vegetable gardens,” said Dak.
Nyaweer Gatleel, a 57-year- old in Guit County, said she was happy to have received one sack of sorghum and one gallon of cooking oil.
“We have never received this wonderful food donation; we thank UNIDO for this donation,” she said.
