Northern Bahr El Ghazal state to vaccinate animals against anthrax

The Northern Bahr El Ghazal state ministry of animal resources said it plans to start vaccination of more than 1.2 million sheep and goats to prevent anthrax from spreading.

This was revealed last week by Samuel Ajing Uguak the director general in the ministry of animal resources during press conference held in Aweil town.

Uguak said several farmers have lost animals due to spread of anthrax in the state. He disclosed the vaccination will begin this week and will be free of charge.

“This round no money will be demanded because the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has donated vaccines and incentives for the vaccinators. So I want to assure you that you will not pay anything to those people going door to door vaccinating animals,” Uguak said.

He said anthrax causes splenic fever and is a killer.

Uguak appealed to residents across the state to wait for the vaccinators in their homes.

Most of the citizens in the state and greater Bahr El Ghazal region are dependent on livestock for economic survival.
