Jonglei state authorities condemn fighting in Pibor
The government of Jonglei state has condemned the fighting that erupted recently in Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) between Lou-Nuer and Murle youth.
“We are saddened and shocked by the report of barbaric attack on Gumruk County of Greater Pibor Administrative Area by armed criminals suspected to be from our state. This news reached us when the Acting Governor H.E Jacob Akech Dengdit, and some ministers were on a mission to assess the flooding situation in Jale,” said a statement issued by John Samuel Manyuon, the minister of information and communication in Jonglei State on Tuesday.
He said that the State Governor Denay Jock Chagor, and his deputy Jacob Akech Dengdit have condemned this attack on neighboring GPAA.
The violence first erupted on December 25th in Lanam village before later on spreading to Gumuruk town. The violence left 57 people killed and scores injured, in addition sizable number of cattle was looted and properties destroyed.
It called on the Lou-Nuer attackers to immediately withdraw from the territories GPAA.
“We are calling on the national government to intervene, and be part of the solution into ending this cycle of inter-communal violence of killing, child abduction and cattle raiding in Jonglei and GPAA,” it said.
“As government of Jonglei state, we are reaffirming our commitment towards peace between our people and those of Greater Pibor Administrative Area, we agreed on October 16th 2022 in Pibor town that we will always call criminals as criminals and not as communities or ethnicity because the atrocities being committed are perpetuated by individuals who acted on their own,” it added.
Manyuon sent condolences and sympathy to families affected in this latest violence.
