Impact Health Organization Advocates for the Introduction of PCV and Rotavirus Vaccines in South Sudan

Juba, South Sudan – November 12, 2023 – On the occasion of World Pneumonia Day, Impact Health Organization calls upon policymakers, legislators, and stakeholders to recognize the critical importance of introducing the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) and rotavirus vaccine in South Sudan. These life-saving vaccines have the potential to significantly reduce the burden of pneumonia and other vaccine-preventable diseases, thereby improving public health and fostering economic growth.

Importance of PCV and Rotavirus Vaccines

Pneumonia remains a leading cause of death among children under five in South Sudan. The introduction of PCV can prevent thousands of child deaths annually by protecting against pneumococcal diseases. Similarly, rotavirus is a leading cause of severe diarrhea among young children, leading to dehydration and death. The rotavirus vaccine can drastically reduce the incidence of severe diarrhea, hospitalizations, and fatalities.

Health and Economic Benefits

The health benefits of increased immunization coverage are clear: lives saved, reduced disease incidence, and decreased healthcare costs. Beyond the immediate health impacts, there are substantial economic benefits. According to the Addis Ababa Declaration on Immunization, “Immunization saves lives, makes communities more productive, and is a core component of strengthening health systems and attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.”

By preventing diseases, immunization reduces healthcare spending on treatment and hospitalization, while also enhancing workforce productivity by reducing illness-related absenteeism. The introduction of PCV and rotavirus vaccines represents a significant investment in the future of South Sudan, with potential long-term economic returns.

Commitment of South Sudan

South Sudan has demonstrated its commitment to improving public health through its recent application to Gavi for the introduction of PCV and rotavirus vaccines. This move aligns with the nation’s pledge to the Addis Ababa Declaration on Immunization, where South Sudan is committed to achieving and sustaining high immunization coverage, securing sustainable financing, strengthening immunization systems, empowering local communities, and collecting better data.

By prioritizing funding for PCV and rotavirus vaccines, South Sudan can take a significant step towards achieving its public health goals and improving the well-being of its citizens.
