Health ministry declares cholera outbreak in Upper Nile State                                                                          

The National Ministry of Health on Tuesday declared cholera outbreak in Malakal town of Upper Nile State.

“Since February 22, 2023, a total of 179 cholera cases including one death has been reported from Malakal, Upper Nile State, most of the cases are males while 73 are females,” Yolanda Awel Deng Juach, the national minister of health told journalists in Juba.                                       

Juach disclosed that two out of the 9 samples subject to PCR test at the public health emergency operation center confirmed cholera.

“With the positive PCR test results, the ministry of health hereby declares a confirmed outbreak of cholera in Malakal, Upper Nile State. The ministry of health will continue to work with partners to ensure preparedness, readiness and response efforts are fully implemented and people of South Sudan are protected from cholera,” Juach said.           

The last cholera outbreak was confirmed in Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area from 19 March to 14 August 2022.
