The German Embassy in South Sudan is funding an emergency nutrition response by the Coalition for Humanity to support vulnerable communities in Guit County, Unity State, where acute malnutrition and food insecurity remain severe.
The funding will support nutrition services in four priority outreach sites — Kuach, Kuerguiny, Wathnyotna and Chotyiel — where access to essential nutrition services remains limited.
German Ambassador to South Sudan Sebastian Brökelmann said the funding reflects Germany’s commitment to supporting the country’s most vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.
“Germany is continuously supporting the people of South Sudan. We focus on the needs of the most vulnerable groups,” Brökelmann said. He added that the initiative aims to ensure affected communities receive adequate support to combat acute malnutrition.
The response will prioritize young children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, who face heightened risks associated with acute malnutrition.
It will also target displaced people, returnees and households whose access to food, health care, nutrition services and other essential assistance has been disrupted by conflict and recurrent flooding.
The project will focus on hard-to-reach communities, particularly those cut off during floods or periods of insecurity and unable to access fixed nutrition facilities.
Guit County faces a prolonged nutrition emergency driven by food insecurity, flooding, displacement, localized insecurity, disease risks, disruptions to humanitarian assistance and restricted access.
The county is classified under Phase 4 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) for acute food insecurity and Phase 4 for acute malnutrition, indicating emergency-level conditions.
Brökelmann reaffirmed Germany’s continued support for South Sudan, describing the country as Germany’s second-largest bilateral donor.
