Floods displace residents in Leer, Unity State
An estimated 1,300 individuals were displaced by floods in the three payams know as Adok, Yang, and Thonyor in Unity State’s Leer County last week after heavy rains confirmed to media outlets by John Jal Goak, a resident of Leer Town. According to Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO)
Mr. Jal added that most of the displaced people have arrived in the township after their homes were inundated by flood waters. He said the flood-affected people have no food, shelter, and other necessities because they lost their properties to the floods after heavy rains.
“Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is seriously concern about the potential threats of the floods on our communities in the areas identified to be witnessing heavy floods.” Said Edmund Yakani, Executive Director for CEPO.
CEPO is urging the government of South Sudan to urgently release the funds it approved for mitigation of floods.
South Sudan’s cabinet has approved $78 million to address the challenges expected to be caused by floods this year, however, the money is yet to be released.
South Sudan’s government also claims that it doesn’t have money, civil servants have gone for eight months without salaries.
“It is essential that any responses to the floods threats should take into account fully response to the specific needs of persons with disabilities in the face the floods.” CEPO added.
South Sudan has experienced six years of severe floods since it attained independence 13 years ago.
Central Equatoria, Jonglei, Unity, Northern Bahr El Ghazal and Warrap States and Pibor Administrative Area have been the ones most affected by flooding
