Ethiopia offers 87 engineering scholarships to South Sudanese students

At least 87 South Sudanese students are set to benefit from a four-year Technical Education and Vocational Training (TVET) engineering scholarship in Ethiopia.

The various fields of the scholarship include civil, electrical, road construction, ICT, building construction, and computer technology and manufacturing technology.

Nebil Mahdi, the Ethiopian Ambassador to South Sudan said the scholarship is part of a strategic partnership agreement signed in November 2022 by the two countries.

“This is part of bilateral relation in capacity building program delivered by the Ethiopian government to people of South Sudan,” Mahdi told journalists in Juba on Monday.

He said the scholarship is fully funded by the Ethiopian government.

Last year, the Ethiopian government announced an increase in the number of scholarships for South Sudanese students from 160 to 210.

This development follows a visit by the Minister of Education of Ethiopia to South Sudan, where the two countries signed the Education Cooperation Agreement.

Previously, Ethiopia provided 100 scholarships for both post-graduate and under-graduate and 60 for TVET.

In the new agreement, the number of under-graduate and post-graduate scholarships for South Sudanese students was increased to 150 while they maintained the 60 slots for TVET.
