The Minister of Information, Communication and Postal service Michael Makeui has said the country will go for election even without some laws being passed with inclusion of the permanent constitution.

Makeui said the elected members would make permanent constitution from their constituencies for them to represent the voices of their people.

“Instead of us using this current assembly, we are saying let us elect the representatives of the people, these are the people which will come and pass this constitution. They are the ones who will come and write this constitution,” he said.

He stated that country would go into election even without all condition to the elections adding the country will continue with the process without fail.

“You don’t need to implement all the provisions of the agreement 100%. Some provision can be put aside as long as they are not necessary,” he said.

“We going for election because we need to give the people of South Sudan that right, allow them to exercise their rights to elect the people they want so that they come and talk on their affairs because most of the current parliament is not an elected parliament,” he said.

He expressed the government’s willingness to conduct the election as declared by the president Salva Kiir Mayardit in 2024.

He added that the country will not go for further extension over full implementation of the agreement citing other laws or conditions to the election will be implemented as time goes on depending on its importance.

“We are going for election, our allies and we as SPLM. SPLM being the leading parties are going for elections and all the parties signatory to the agreement are free to decided on what to do,” he cited.

South Sudan extended it transitional period by 24 months citing the key provisions in the 2018 peace agreement not implemented after the transitional period had ended in 2022.
