Cyber-crime on the rise in South Sudan, warns communication authority
South Sudan’s national communication authority has raised red flag on the growing number of cyber-crime in the country.
Napoleon Adok Gai, the Director General of National Communication Authority called on the public to be more vigilant about deceptive tactics employed by cyber criminals.
“We would like to alert the public to growing cyber threats involving WhatsApp accounts takeover attempts. Cybercriminals are employing deceptive tactics where they attempt to hijack, target WhatsApp accounts by exploiting their target’s phone number,” Gai said in a statement issued in Juba on Saturday.
Gai revealed that South Sudan Computer Incident Response Team (SS-CIRT) will this month spearhead national cybersecurity awareness campaign under the global theme “It is easy to stay safe online”.
“I am pleased to introduce the South Sudan Computer Incident Response Team, South Sudan’s first line of defense against cyber incidents. SS-CIRT will embark on incident management, provide tips and guidelines, and advisory notices aimed at safeguarding our digital landscape from cyber threats,” he said.
Criminals have this year hacked into websites and computer system of institutions such as the central bank and the official Facebook page of the First Vice President Riek Machar.
