Civil society urges region to intervene amid fighting in Khartoum
The South Sudan Civil Society Alliance has urged the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), African Union and the international community to convince the Sudanese warring parties’ into peaceful settlement of the conflict.
On Saturday, fierce fighting broke out in Khartoum following simmering tension between the army under Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the head of the Sudan Sovereign Council and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
“We are asking for ceasefire to take effect immediately, we also call on IGAD, AU and international community to take their responsibility by talking to the parties to convince them to sit on the table and negotiate,” Akuoch Ajang, the Chairperson for South Sudan Civil Society Alliance said at press conference in Juba on Sunday.
Deep differences have emerged between the Sudanese army and the RSF, particularly regarding the latter’s integration into the army as stipulated in a framework agreement signed between military and civilian leaders on December 5, 2022.
